I
remember the first time I heard this quote from Ira Glass. His insight about the creative process is wonderful, but there was was one point in particular that caught my attention. The part about TASTE.
Your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit.Ira Glass
Taste is what drives us to improve and constantly pushes us forward. Taste is what makes your work YOUR work. In our minds, we know what’s possible and we can see what we want to make. Unfortunately, we’re not able to achieve it from the outset. There are two options at that point.
1. Give Up
You tell yourself that you aren’t going to ever realize your vision, so why even bother. Or…
2. Push Forward
The preferable option is that you work even harder. You put in the time, energy, and effort so that someday you can actually make your vision a reality. It takes a lot of time and plenty of frustration, but that’s just how it works. More importantly, the reward of actually realizing your vision is a beautiful thing. So don’t quit.
It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions.Ira Glass
